Wardens Weekly Message

Dear Members and Friends of St. Mark’s Church, Barriefield

Here we are in mid-August, a hot and mostly dry summer! It seems a long time ago since March when we were glued to our televisions, fearful of the news of a world-wide pandemic. With trials and errors in how to handle and control this virus, we now look ahead to the time we can come together again as a faith community to worship safely. That is going to be a challenge and we are guided by the Diocese, and indeed the Province of Ontario for direction. We are awaiting that stage now – for Diocesan Guidelines to see how we can distance physically to keep everyone safe.

As we wait, meeting each other on Sunday morning Zoom worship services, visiting just a few people now and then, reaching out to others as we can, let us turn to the Love that God has for us and the world.

God is Love. 1 John 4:7-8 reveals: Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, for God is love.

. . . and in John 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us. Romans 5:5

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

Abundant, reckless, bountiful, overflowing, endless, infinite, absolute, unlimited: love.

It is we who choose to accept it, or not.

Should we say yes, and live in that Love, we become as we were made to be. Fully human. Living in the image – according to the likeness – of our Creator.

Should we reject that offering – should our hearts turn aside that gift – we become what we can be on our own. Alone. Lonely. Defensive. Frightened.

We pray:

Creator God, you made us all in your image: may we discern you in all that we see, and serve you in all that we do; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

O Lord, our refuge, our hope, and our peace, be with us as our protector and our salvation. Keep us all safe from danger, calm those who are anxious in spirit, and help our whole society to work together to continue to protect the most vulnerable, through Jesus Christ our Lord.       Amen.
